More Elephants

Wirths Elephants in Maffra

We have been out trying to show the Wirths Circus elephants in their original context. It's a bit hard to do, as we think the original photographer was working with a wide-angle lens. I mean, how else do you photograph five elephants in a row?

Spencer tells us the circus used to arrive on its own special train. In this case, the elephants will have got off the train, headed down the road and hung a rightie to go past the factory. Where they were photographed.

If you drop over to the flickr page for this photo, you can see links in the ABC Open project to other elephants. Including these ones in far north Queensland.

Elephants in the Landscape

Elephants

Every now and then, the subject of elephants rears its heads. Usually it is someone asking exactly where the elephant was buried near the viaduct near Stratford. No-one knows exactly. Then someone else comes out with all their Gippsland Elephants stories.

But this one came out of no-where (or, to be more exact, the back of the Cannon album we were cataloguing).

Unfortunately the light got into the film, so it is not perfect. But you can just see the Cir-Cus truck in the background. We don't know where this was, but we know they did come to Maffra in times past. You can see them HERE.

You can see the larger version of ours HERE.
